The Andrean Nature Club
On 16th August, 2008, an stimulating guest lecture was held by Mr. N. B. Nariani from Petroleum Conservation Research Association (P.C.R.A). He conducted an interesting quiz on “Energy Conservation”. He awarded students spot prizes for their spontaneous answers. Students enjoyed these events even as they gained knowledge about fuel resources.
Following the session on Energy Conservation, was a guest lecture and presentation about the “Clean-Up Mumbai Drive” which was arranged and put together by Mr. Omkar on 15th December, 2008. During this session, a few students were selected to act as Clean-Up Marshall’s in the Drive, thereby collecting fines for spitting and urinating in the city.
In the New Year, the ANC introduced the “Batti Bandh drive” that focused on saving electricity and making the students aware of the fact that in the wake of Global Warming, the available power supply cannot be taken for granted. In the month of January, 2009, the Nature Club students spread the message in every class, to conserve electricity during the break and after the lecture time, to switch off the lights and fans whenever they pass by a class that has no students. The students were quite successful in accomplishing their task of convincing many students to join this drive.
On 17th Jan, 09, 110 students along with Prof. Ayesha Qureshi, visited the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, for a trek, which was famously called the ‘Nature Club trek’ by the ANC students. The “Nature Information Centre” of the National Park has put up qualitative information about the various aspects of our country like the different regions, different traditions, different species, etc which were explained in detail by Prof. A. Qureshi. The “Kanheri Caves” gave the students an insight of the rich architecture that India can boast of. The students enjoyed themselves and welcomed the trek as a refreshing break from their routine.
The last activity of the ANC was the I.F.P.P.C – Inter Faculty Project Presentation Competition on “Global Warming”. It was conducted on 9th February, 2009 and was open to all faculties. We had participants from B.M.S, B.M.M, B.Sc {I.T} and regular B.Com and B.A. The judges for the competition were Prof. Ayesha Qureshi and Ms. Shabana. The winning teams were given cash prizes.
The prize winners were:
- 1st Place : Neil D’souza & Madhu Nair - S.Y.B.M.S. B
- 2nd Place : Mcdora D’Almeida & Samantha Sequeira - F.Y.B.Com. B
- 3rd Place : Eureka Murzello , Chrysann Pereira & Christina Pereira - F.Y.B.Com. C
The ANC provided many practical educational activities this year and we look forward to greater co-operation and participation of students in our quest for a better environment.
